title:Russia soccer team prepares for Cameroon friendly amid UEFA ban

The Russian national soccer team trained near Moscow on Tuesday (Oct 10) before facing Cameroon in a friendly match on Thursday (Oct 12). The team has been excluded from international competitions since Russia launched a 'special military operation' in Ukraine in February 2022, which sparked a strong reaction from UEFA and other soccer federations.

UEFA announced on Tuesday that it had withdrawn its proposal to allow Russian junior teams to participate in its tournaments, after failing to find a technical solution to enable them to play.

UEFA said in a statement that the plan, which was strongly opposed by Ukraine and other countries, was dropped because "no technical solution to allow Russian teams to play could be found."

Russia's national soccer team coach Valery Karpin said he was not surprised by UEFA's decision to keep the ban on Russian teams.

"I didn't expect them to let us (play), and I didn't expect (the decision) to be recalled," he told reporters on Tuesday.

UEFA had suspended all Russian teams - national or club sides - from its competitions after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, which Moscow calls a 'special military operation'.

But last month, UEFA said that "children should not be punished for actions whose responsibility lies exclusively with adults," and that it would readmit Russia's U-17 teams to its competitions "in the course of this season."
